How to Maintain and Care for Your Luxury Jewelry

At MARCO DAL MASO, we understand that your luxury jewelry is not just an accessory, but a cherished investment.
Whether your collection includes diamond jewelry for men, lustrous pearls for women, oxidized pieces, or gleaming gold jewelry, proper care and attention are essential to maintaining their valuable condition. Here are practical jewelry care tips to help you keep your pieces looking their best.

1. REGULAR CLEANING

Routine Cleaning:
  • Use a gentle, non-abrasive jewelry cleaner or a solution of mild soap and warm water.
This method is ideal for diamond jewelry for men or women, which needs regular upkeep to maintain its brilliance.
However, vermeil and oxidised silver require more delicate care, see below for specific guidance.
  • Softly scrub with a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove dirt and oils from intricate designs like leather bracelets for men.
  • Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth to ensure no water spots remain.
Professional Cleaning:
  • Schedule professional cleanings at least once a year, particularly for more delicate items like diamond earrings, to ensure deep cleaning and maintenance.
  • Professionals can also inspect for loose settings or potential damage, preserving the integrity of your diamond or 18kt gold collections.

2. PURPOSEFUL STORAGE

Separate Compartments:
  • Store each piece in a separate compartment of a jewelry box to prevent scratches and tangling. This is especially important for hoop earrings and silver and gold chains that can often tangle together.
  • Use soft pouches or cloth-lined boxes for additional protection.
  • Store vermeil and oxidised silver separately to prevent rubbing and preserve finishes.
Avoid Direct Sunlight:
  • Keep jewelry away from direct sunlight, as prolonged exposure can cause certain gemstones and luxury jewelry pieces to fade.
Humidity Control:
  • Store in a cool, dry place to avoid tarnishing, especially for silver and gold items.
  • Consider using silica gel packets to control moisture levels, which is ideal for preserving the condition of sterling silver or vermeil jewelry.

3. HANDING AND WEARING TIPS

Before Wearing:
  • Put on jewelry after applying makeup, perfume, or hairspray to prevent chemical exposure, which can damage delicate pieces.
  • Avoid wearing jewelry while swimming, bathing, or engaging in vigorous activities such as lifting weights, contact sports, or spa visits to protect from damage.
  • Sunscreen and lotion can also dull metals and gemstones, wait until dry before wearing.
Regular Inspections:
  • Check for loose stones, worn prongs, or broken clasps before wearing your luxury jewelry.
  • Seek professional repairs if any issues are detected to prevent further damage and loss.

4. SPECIAL CARE FOR DIFFERENT MATERIALS

Oxidized Sterling Silver Jewelry:
Oxidised silver is 925 sterling silver treated to create a darkened surface, giving each piece a rugged character that evolves beautifully with wear.
  • Avoid contact with harsh chemicals such as perfume, bleach and chlorine and clean gently with a soft, dry jewelry cloth.
  • Store in a dry place, ideally in an airtight bag, to prevent the oxidation from wearing off. Keep it separate from other jewelry to avoid scratches.
Vermeil Jewelry:
Our vermeil pieces are crafted from solid sterling silver and layered in thick, high-quality 18kt gold, offering the look of gold with a silver core. As vermeil is sterling silver with a gold layer, over-cleaning or abrasion may thin the gold.
  • Keep vermeil jewelry dry and remove it before swimming or showering. Clean with a soft, damp jewelry cloth and avoid soaking.
  • Store in a cool, dry place and use pouches or lined boxes to prevent tarnishing and scratches. Avoid friction and impacts to protect the gold layer.
Pearls:
We use real, cultured pearls chosen for their lustre and character, no two are ever identical - and that’s exactly the point.
  • Wipe with a damp cloth after each wear to remove oils and perspiration. Store flat in a soft cloth to prevent scratching and stretching of the string.
  • Pearls are delicate and should be kept away from harsh chemicals. Clean with a soft, damp cloth and avoid using ultrasonic cleaners.
  • Store flat and never hang pearl necklaces, as it can stretch the silk thread.
Diamonds:
All MARCO DAL MASO diamonds - whether white, black or luminous with another colour - are responsibly sourced and chosen for their cut, clarity, and impact.
  • For larger diamond jewelry, regularly clean with a solution of one part ammonia to six parts water. This helps maintain the sparkle of diamonds on engagement rings and diamond pendants or tennis bracelets. Ammonia is NOT recommended near any piece that includes gold plating, oxidised silver, or pearls
  • Avoid touching diamonds directly to minimize oil buildup from skin.
Gold:
All our gold pieces are made using recycled 18kt gold and certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), ensuring both ethical sourcing and exceptional quality.
  • Use a mixture of lukewarm water and mild detergent to clean your gold pieces, such as 18kt gold bracelets.
  • Buff gently with a clean chamois cloth to restore shine and remove any tarnish.
925 Silver:
925 sterling silver is the standard for high-quality silver jewellery, balancing brilliance with durability. Every MARCO DAL MASO silver piece meets this benchmark.
  • Use a silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish from your silver jewelry, including leather bracelets for men.
  • Store in anti-tarnish bags or cloths to keep them looking new.
Gemstones:
We use natural gemstones including sapphires, garnets, rubies, and more. Each cut and set to reveal their full depth, vibrance, and individuality.
  • Use a soft cloth to clean colored gemstones like emeralds, rubies, or sapphires, found in our unique luxury jewelry pieces.
  • Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, as vibrations can cause damage to the settings and stones.

5. PROTECTING JEWELRY DURING TRAVEL

Travel Cases:
  • Invest in a good-quality travel jewelry case with secure compartments. This ensures that your luxury jewelry is safely stored.
  • Wrap each piece in a soft cloth or tissue paper to prevent scratches.
  • Avoid checking fine jewelry in luggage, keep it in your carry-on where possible
Insurance:
  • Consider insuring your high-value pieces to protect against loss, theft, or damage, especially during travel.
  • Attempting DIY repairs may void warranty or cause permanent damage, always consult a trusted jeweller

6. DEALING WITH DAMAGED JEWELRY

Professional Repairs:
  • Always seek a professional jeweler for repairs, especially for complex items like diamond pavè set jewelry.
  • Regularly inspect your jewelry and address any issues promptly to prevent further damage.
By following these jewelry care tips from MARCO DAL MASO, you can preserve the beauty and longevity of your luxury jewelry. Regular maintenance, proper storage, and careful handling are essential to keeping your precious pieces in excellent condition, ensuring they remain a source of pride and elegance for years to come.
